.. ma un base jump con la mtb:
Bike-Base! Stefan is the first man to ever make a complete Base-jump on a mountain-bike. In other words: he jumped his bike off a 3000 ft-cliff, deployed his
parachute while holding on to the bike, landed on it and rode off. According to Stefan this was an extremely comitting stunt that he prepared for 1 year.
So far, everybody who has tried Base-jumping on a bike dropped it due to the complexity and the dangers involved in keeping the bike during freefall, deployment and landing.
Stefan: Keeping the bike and landing on it changes everything. If you keep it, you enter a totally different level of commitment, as you will need to attach the bike to you; with all the possibilities for entanglements of your gear and only 1 parachute quite a step. Once you go for it, you must get a perfectly clean exit and keep the bike stable during the freefall and especially during the opening-sequence. Every failure to do so will get you into BIG trouble. Once you’re parachute opens you have to deal with all the possible dangers of a Base-jump – with a bike being attached to you. And once you’ve done that, you still have to land on it – easy if you have 4 hands (2 for steering the parachute and 2 for the handlebar to take the
impact), but as humans only have 2, not quite so easy.
But I’m happy that I was able to pull off the jump - it was good that all the time, energy and money I put into this project eventually led to a success.
Thanks to Rob at Santa Cruz Bicycles, the VP-Free was the perfect bike for it.
