Steve Peat won his 17th Mountain Bike World Cup downhill round today, beating the previous record set by Nicolas Vouilloz and giving him his second victory in a row.
Peat (Santa Cruz Syndicate) was third-from-last to set off. He stormed down the hill in Vallnord, Andorra, putting in extra pedal strokes wherever possible, to take the lead with a time of 2:22.05.
Next up was fellow Brit Gee Atherton (Animal Commencal), who was just 0.02 seconds slower. Last man down was Australian Sam Hill (Monster Energy Specialized), who was over a second up on the top half of the course but limped across the finish line in 2:27.89, leaving third place to Peat's team-mate, South African Greg Minnaar (2:23.46).
In the women's race, Frenchwoman Sabrina Jonnier (Maxxis Rocky Mountain) took the lead by 3.87 seconds (2:41.58). She was followed by her countrywoman Emmeline Ragot (Suspension Center, 2:45.45) and Britain's Tracy Moseley (Trek World Racing, 2:45.47).
