Thank you for sharing your views on this project. We keep track
of incoming e-mails on specific issues like this and inform management
on what issues have drawn concern. So you should know your voice is being heard.
As you know, Alcoa is planning to build a plant in a coastal town
that will receive power from a project that is being built by the
National Power Company of Iceland
( e questo dovrebbe consolarci?). That hydro project has been approved
by the Icelandic parliament and the Ministry of the Environment.
Icelandic authorities have concluded that both projects in eastern
Iceland offer a good opportunity to foster economic development
there which is strongly supported by the local population. The government
(Di cosa il government dell'Islanda o dell'Alcoa o degli USA ?)
believes that, as the fishing industry becomes less labor-intensive,
it is critical that rural parts of Iceland develop a more diversified economic base.
We understand that this is a very sensitive matter and there is
significant opposition to the project in Iceland. We are still informed
that polls show that a
clear majority of Icelanders (and not just
elected officials) are in favor of the aluminum plant.
Please rest assured that Alcoa will do its best to build a plant
that is absolutely state of the art(le stesse cose che hanno detto di tutti gli impianti produttivi al momento della costruzione). Please also understand that
from an environmental perspective, this plant will allow us to rebalance
our global portfolio to rely less on fossil-fuel power which tends
to be a major source of carbon dioxide emissions. Replacing fossil-fuel-based
power with renewable hydropower will help us lower our CO2 emissions,
contributing to the fight against global warming

that there are many environmental challenges associated with this
project and we will do our absolute best to minimize them.
