Red Bull District Ride in Nuremberg, Germany – 1st qualifying
Adam Hauck wins the Sick O Award!!!

[comunicato stampa] - After a great training session this morning at Nuremberg’s awesome urban freeride course, the riders were ready to throw down their first run of qualifying at 3pm. The sun came out right for before the 1st rider and the crowds were piling up to catch the great show. In fact 15,000 people already came for the qualifying day. Who knows how many will come tomorrow for the finals!!!
First real impressive run got thrown down by Timo Pritzel from Berlin, Germany. He was already going off in the dirt district in practise, but in his qualifying run it went nearly all perfect. Just at the big drop which is going down almost 9 metres (over 25ft.) which he cleared on his hardtail, he slipped the pedal. After some backflips on the course and some great style he finished in the dirt jumps with a flip, table top-one foot and a 360. 3rd place for Timo.
The 2nd place rider was a big surprise. Amir Kabbani who is 17years old and the youngest competitor in Nuremberg. He already showed great performance in Catania, Italy three weeks ago. But today he impressed many more people. He turned some people’s head when he jumped out of the wings district with a barspin to fully extended x-up. At the Up’n’down step up box he jumped up with one more barspin and jumped down with a 360, which was the greatest performance in that district. Heads up to this young fellow, we are curious what he will show us in the future.
Just like in Catania the day 1 qualifying 1st place goes to Cameron McCaul. He had most tricks to show like a x-up down the big drop and couple of barspins and nofoot cancans. In the really difficult and big dirt jumps he jumped a nofoot cancan at the first set and another one to the opposite side on the 2nd set and a tailwhip at the last set. Big points from the judges and 1st place on Friday for Cameron.

A few hot shots had bad luck in their first run. E.g. Andreu Lacondeguy (2nd place form Catania) crashed hard with a big backflip just before the finish at the first dirt jump. Crankworx Winner Cameron Zink also had a scratch in his first run, because he crashed at the big drop.

Right after the qualifying the top 5 riders that impressed the judges the most in the street district went for Oakley’s Sick O Award. It was jibbin’ time for last year’s winner Aaron Chase, Lance McDermott, Cameron McCaul, Grant Fielder and Adam Hauck.
Aaron did great 360 nose picks but ended up 2nd, tie with Lance McDermott who did awesome handplant-360’s over the spine as well as a huge backflip over the spine as well.
The winner was the 18yr. old youngster from New Jersey Adam Hauck. Adam killed it in the street district, he cleared tailwhips in the quarter and even went for wallride to tailwhips which impressed the judges most and he finally won the Sick O Award which was a pretty sick prize: the Oakley O-ROKR Bluetooth glasses together with a limited edition Motorola phone in gold!!! On top Adam earned himself 1,000 Euros and we are curious how the rookie will do in the future, but much respect for the amazing performance.

We can expect a really exciting 2nd run tomorrow just before lunchtime, since quite a few riders crashed and it is still tight in the top 15. So who will make it into the top 10?
And more important who will be on the podium? And the FORD pick up truck is waiting, so come and check it out tomorrow in Nuremberg and start betting your money on who will win that one!!!

Here are the top 15 from the 1st qualifier

1. Cameron McCaul
2. Amir Kabbani
3. Timo Pritzel
4. Paul Basagoitia
5. Carlo Dieckmann
6. Darren Berrecloth
7. Aaron Chase
8. Pascal Breitenstein
9. Niels Windfeldt
10. Gee Atherton
11. Lance McDermott
12. Adam Hauck
13. Andreu Lacondeguy
14. Grant Fielder
15. Joscha Forstreuter

Cameron McCaul wins the Red Bull District Ride 2006 in Nuremberg-
Paul Basagoitia takes home the pimped FORD Pick up truck!

Nuremberg August 5th 2006 – During the last two days the hometown of Albrecht Duerer was completely under siege by the mountainbike freeride scene. 21 of the world’s best riders from 8 different countries came to Nuremberg for the 2nd Red Bull District Ride of the year.
In front of the impressive scenery, with an even better course with bigger obstacles and 45,000 spectators (!!!), Cameron McCaul dominated Europe’s most prestigious event of the year.
Paul Basagoitia placed second and achieved the highest overall score, since he won the first District Ride in Catania: now he is the proud owner of a pimped FORD pick up truck. Darren Berrecloth placed third with a great performance.

Like in Catania the riders were meant to do two final runs through six districts. In the first district, the drop district, the riders had to choose either between the big castle wall drop and the smaller one which lead into the Marzocchi quarter pipe. In the second district – the downtown district – you had to take a drop over a rail and two box jumps in a row. The third district – the wing district – was truly challenging and unique since it was two mini ramps combined and the riders showed tricks like 360s, backflips supermans and much more. After that the show went on in the street district, which was also the centre of Oakley’s Sick O Award on Friday evening. It was a great section for the most progressive urban riders. The 5th district was the Step up’n’ Down District right by the town hall where riders came from a curved wallride and went for the big BRAUN box heading towards the catwalk to take their last breathe for the final district on the main market: the Dirt District where the riders finished with the greatest tricks and big airs. The impressive spectator scenery pushed the guys to give their maximum.
Whether young or old, everyone was going off and screaming no one could stay calm.

After the qualifying runs on Friday and Saturday the riders had to run in the opposite order of their qualifying result. The following ten athletes were competing against each other: Kyle Strait, Adam Hauck, Lance McDermott, Paul Basagoitia, Darren Berrecloth,
Gee Atherton, Timo Pritzel, Amir Kabbani and Cameron McCaul. They were battling for 20,000 Euros and of course the title of the Red Bull District Ride and also for the special pimped FORD truck.

Just before the first final run the rain came in and the crowds had to wait for their idols for another while. The rain stopped after 15minutes and the riders had a meeting with the head judge Paul Rak and they decided to run the first final without the drop district since

the landing was too wet and of course safety’s first all riders. Since it rained again after the first final run, the riders and judges decided that only the one final run will count.

Kyle Strait was the first rider. He had actually troubles in the beginning of the event since his bike didn’t show up in time, but he got it Friday night, so he was able to ride the 2nd qualifier and made it thru as 10th. He had an amazing run and finished up with a double tailwhip. 4th place for him.

Darren Berrecloth rode impressive both days. But he stepped it up in his final run. He threw down the sickest line of the day in the dirt district with an indian-air-seatgrab, a huge 360 table top and a tailwhip. Those tricks boosted him up to the podium. Third place for him!

Paul Basagoitia, the winner of Catania and everyone knew, he wanted to win the FORD truck. Paul rode so well in his final run. He started off with a flip over the downtown stair drop. In the Wings District he did an x-up into the first mini and a 360 out off the Wings District, then another flip over the street box and a couple more good moves in the street zone. At the BRAUN box he jumped 360 off it and went up the catwalk to chill for a second and prepare for the dirts with tons of spectators firing him up for his final jumps. Here we go his last three runs: x-up, 360 and a great tailwhip over the last set. Yihaah! Was that enough for the truck?
Mr. Cam McCaul was the last contender that went down and he had to show tons of tricks
to the massive audience. A barrel roll over the first downtown stair drop, then a bar spin at the first box and a nofooted cancan at the second box. In the wings he pulled another barspin and also a 360. He continued again with a barrel roll at the box into the street district, did a 360 over the street spine, oh man that young man performed so good!!! He came out of the curved wallride and jumped up a barspin onto the BRAUN box and a 360 off it then he just had the dirts ahead and it looked all good for him, the crowd was pumped and Cam was going off, he jumped an indian air seatgrab, then nofooted cancan and a tailwhip. The brain cells of the judges were heating up, but they all agreed Cam had the best run of the day. First place and 6,500 Euros for him.

There were other riders killing it as well, but ended their runs with a bit of bad luck e.g. like Timo Pritzel who had an awesome run as well, with a huge backflip onto the BRAUN box, but he crashed at the end because he couldn’t keep his speed at the last dirt jump. So Timo got 7th.

Also Andreu Lacondeguy had this problem, he rode really well, had more tricks than most riders, but he didn’t finish the course just like Timo and placed 5th.

So the winner was Cameron McCaul with 34,1 points. He could beat Paul Bas who placed second with 32,2 points and Darren Berrecloth, who placed third with 30,7.

Absolutely stoked by his results McCaul stated shortly after the awards ceremony: “It was a great contest. I could not have ridden any better! I nailed everything what I planned for the final run. After Catania it was another absolutely fantastic weekend. Tonight it will be a great party for sure!”

But yet another rider had all reasons to be happy.

Shortly after the awards ceremony the overall winner of Catania and Nuremberg was announced. His name is Paul Basagoitia. It won’t take long and the FORD pick up truck will be cruising through the streets of Minden, Nevada. “I can hardly believe it. I am absolutely stoked! The truck is killing it! I didn’t dare to even think about winning the car before the contest.”

Results:

Cameron McCaul 34,1
Paul Basagoitia 32,3
Darren Berrecloth 30,7
Kyle Strait 28,3
Andreu Lacondeguy 27,8
Gee Atherton 26,8
Timo Pritzel 26,1
Adam Hauck 24,2
Amir Kabbani 23,7
Lance McDermott 17
