CANNONDALE LICENZIA 52 DIPENDENTI

Cannondale laid off 52 factory workers Thursday following a four-month manufacturing efficiency study by consultants Synergetics Installations Worldwide. The move is part of the consulting group's plan to make Cannondale more competitive with overseas bike makers. Pegasus Capital Advisors, Cannondale's parent company, hired Synergistic Installations in May.

John Doerr, Cannondale's chief operating officer, said company management felt comfortable with the layoffs because production at the factory is up.

"In some areas we have seen 30 to 40 percent production gains. Across the board we didn't hit those numbers, but through process simplification, plant productivity gains have been substantial," Doerr said.

Among those who lost jobs were welders, painters, sanders, assemblers and other manufacturing and distribution support people.

Cannondale boosted production efficiency by changing the layout of the factory, adding new equipment and improving scheduling.

"Through schedule balancing we are making sure we aren't over burdening one center and under burdening another center. We also have a lot of data gathering so we can track productivity in real time and react to problems when the come up," Doerr said.

Doerr said Cannondale's goal is to eliminated waste and simplify manufacturing processes. He said the changes at the factory have improved productivity, not added to the workload of the workforce.

"It isn't that they are working 20 percent harder, but that they are 20 percent more efficient in the work they do. I used to see guys with leather smocks and goggles walking around the factory, pulling carts to their work space or looking for pieces because their work stations weren't prepared correctly. Now they can focus on welding," Doer said.

In August, Cannondale announced that it will outsource cycling apparel and accessories production next year. That move will result in the loss of 50 more jobs. Cannondale currently employs just under 400 at its Bedford factory.

At the Interbike Show in Las Vegas last on Monday, Doerr and several other Cannondale and Pegasus executives spoke to nearly 200 retailers and suppliers. During the presentation, they reaffirmed their commitment to manufacturing in the United States. Doerr said the moves are in line with that plan.

"To be a domestic manufacturer you have to be competitive on a global level and this is a step in that direction," he said.

In a company press release, Larry Saver, Cannondale's vice president of manufacturing, expounded on that.

"Because we are paying U.S. workers U.S. wages and our competitors are using cheap labor, we absolutely have to keep our operations as lean and efficient as possible. Maximizing efficiencies and flexibility is critical to our competitiveness and it's in the long-term best interest of our dealers, vendors and overall employee base," Sarver said.

da velonews del 3 ottobre:

Those dismissed Wednesday by majority stockholder Pegasus Capital Advisers include Scott Montgomery, vice president of marketing and son of Cannondale founder Joe Montgomery; Dan Alloway, vice president of sales and a 15-year Cannondale employee; and Len Konecny, vice president of purchasing, according to the trade journal.

Ma tu dici che è rientrato il figlio o il nipote di Joe?

Cannondale on Wednesday handed vice presidents Scott Montgomery, Dan Alloway and Len Konecny their walking papers.

Montgomery is the son of company founder Joe Montgomery and had been Cannondale's vice president of marketing. Alloway, who had been with the company for more than 15 years, had been its vice president of sales. Konecny was vice president of purchasing.

The firings shocked the industry.

"I am pretty shocked. I feel numb and am disappointed, but I look forward to the new opportunities," said Jay Wolff, general manager of Helen's Cycles in Southern California.

An employee at a Cannondale parts supplier said, "It's not right. I feel like crying."

Matt Mannelly replaces Montgomery. He is the former chief marketing officer for the United States Olympic Committee. He also held management positions at Nike and was Gatorade's director of marketing.

David Manchester, a longtime Cannondale employee, replaces Alloway. Steve Metz, Cannondale's longtime bike product manager, was named vice president of sourcing and product management, is replacing Konecny.

"These changes provide us with the internal organization needed to realize our goals of strengthening and growing Cannondale, and making us a more consumer and market-driven company," said David Uri, a director of Cannondale and a partner at Cannondale's parent company, Pegasus Capital Advisors.

Montgomery and Alloway could not be reached for comment.

Other changes in the Cannondale management team include Jean Benson's promotion to vice president of human resources and Rick Hinson's promotion to director of materials. Additionally, John Doerr, president of operations, is also now serving as chief operating officer.

Uri acknowledged that Montgomery and Alloway played important roles in growing Cannondale from a small manufacturer to a serious player in the international market as well as guide it through bankruptcy and into Pegasus' hands, but he said the company "needs more to go to the next level."

"We listened to dealers and customers to try to understand what made the company great historically. As we did that, we realized we had deficiencies in certain areas. Both are great people--this is not a personal issue--they have done a great job historically and we would not be where we are without them, but we recognize that to be competitive with Trek and Specialized and others we need to be on the top of our game," Uri said. "We needed additional talent and resources. Matt brings a healthy refreshing perspective that people here will learn from, and that the people who are leaving simply don't possess."

Uri said Pegasus remains committed to manufacturing in the United States and to keeping Cannondale's image at the high end.

"We are working with consultants to meet dealer demand efficiently. We need to serve our customers better. We know it won't happen in a week or a month, but we will be very methodical. We want to grow profitably, not just grow," Uri said.

Some who spoke with Bicycle Retailer & Industry News wondered why the company would fire three vice presidents a week before Interbike. Uri said the Pegasus partners were well aware of the timing.

"Pegasus didn't want to go to Interbike and meet with dealers and sales reps with a team that was familiar to them, then come back and make a very significant management change. There probably never is a great time to do something like this, but now we have the opportunity to showcase this management team at Interbike," Uri said.

Uri and the new management team will be meeting with Cannondale dealers and vendors at 9 and 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 13 in room 102 of the Sands Convention Center, downstairs from the main exhibit hall

Cannondale recently announced the sacking of 55 staff members; including the son of company founder Joe Montgomery, Scott Montgomery. Other high-ranking staff members to be given their marching orders were Dan Alloway, who had been vice president of sales, and Len Konecny, vice president of purchasing.

The decision was based on a joint four-month project between Cannondale senior management and Synergetics Installations Worldwide. "Our parent company, Pegasus Capital Advisors, L.P., recognized significant opportunities to improve production efficiencies when they acquired Cannondale last May," said John Doerr, Cannondale's Chief Operating Officer and President of Operations. "As we focused solely on bicycle production and learned the full extent of those opportunities, we owed it to our 650+ employees worldwide to make the right, albeit painful, decisions necessary to maximize our competitiveness."

Other changes being made included changes to the factory layout to improved materials flow, as well as new manufacturing systems, and consolidated CNC operations.

"Cannondale is the only major bike company that produces all of its bicycles here in America, and we're very proud of that fact," added Larry Sarver, Cannondale's Vice President of Manufacturing. "Because we're paying U.S. workers U.S. wages, and our competitors are using cheap foreign labour, we absolutely have to keep our operations as lean and efficient as possible. Maximizing efficiencies and flexibility is critical to our competitiveness, and it's in the long-term best interests of our dealers, vendors and overall employee base."

Cannondale has also announced that it will outsource it's cycling apparel and accessories production next year, a move that will result in the loss of 50 more jobs.
